Going to have a sort of “Thick as Thieves” weekend : Travelling up to The Lakes for a music filled few days celebrating 35+ years of friendship forged at school and cemented by a love of the same music. Three characters from Boy About Town congregate with their partners, spouses and offspring. So we’re all tasked with choosing just 2 songs from each decade of our lives that make you shake your money-maker. Just Two! Tony, what would yours be? Anyone else?
Understandably there’s a part of me that recoils from this kind of Desert Island Disc request. There is simply too much great music out there to limit yourself to one or two songs a decade. But I know where this is coming from, specifically. Knowing also that I wish I was there with you all, and that the task is made a little easier by the fact that these need to ‘shake your money maker’ I would choose the following…
I added some criteria of my own. The song has to have some real relevance to my life, and I limited myself to one song by any one act. I have strived for variety, but I think the list still nails my musical mast pretty firmly to the sail. I regret that there is no reggae in there.
I will do my best to supply some ‘sleeve notes’ in fullness of time, but please add these to your Lake District weekend playlist. YouTube and Spotify will surely help you fill in any gaps.
Substitute – The Who
In The Midnight Hour – Wilson Pickett
Born To Run – Bruce Springsteen
Thick as Thieves – The Jam
Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now – The Smiths*
I Believe – R.E.M.
(Ocean Rain by Echo & The Bunnymen would be there if not for the demand that it “make you shake your money-maker”.)
* – It shakes MY money-maker
Step On – Happy Mondays
Rez – Underworld
Just Like Fred Astaire – James*
All My Friends – LCD Soundsystem
* – from 1999, but I didn’t hear it until the 2000s.
Worship You – Vampire Weekend
Thieves In The Night – Hot Chip
Great thread – very hard to narrow it down to 2 per decade but here we go:
Wooly Bully – Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs
Hello, Goodbye – The Beatles
Tear the Roof of the Sucker – Parliament
Do anything you wanna do – the Rods
Tainted Love – Soft Cell
Big Time – Peter Gabriel
Old Red Eye’s is Back – The Beautiful South
One – U2
to be completed…
